The history of IJ Duncan Insurance Brokers
In 1955, L.P. Duncan – who had been the CEO of Eagle Star Insurance Company (now Bryte Insurance) – founded LP Duncan and Partners (Pty) Ltd. Duncan’s growing company soon merged with the International Bowring Group in the 1960s, to become C.T. Bowring & Duncan Limited.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Duncan’s son, Ian, earned his stripes in the insurance industry with a stint at Lloyd’s of London, before joining the family business to further his career. In 1973, he flexed his entrepreneurial muscle and founded I.J. Duncan & Partners (Pty) Ltd. Starting on his own, Ian slowly built up the company, creating a stable, sustainable and successful business. I.J. Duncan & Partners was one of the first insurance brokerages in the province of Natal to be awarded delegated authorities and to issue insurance policies in the broker’s office. Although fairly common today, this was almost unheard of at the time.
In 1984, Peter Borley brought his industry acumen to the company, followed by Ian’s sons, Mark Duncan and Paul Duncan, whose international experience was added to the family business in 2003 and 2010 respectively. Today, Peter, Mark and Paul are at the helm of the business, operating as our directors.
In 2021, I.J. Duncan & Partners (Pty) Ltd rebranded as IJ Duncan Insurance Brokers, breathing new life into the business and bringing it into a new era, while staying true to its roots. With a long and successful history in the South African insurance industry, dating back three generations, IJ Duncan Insurance is perfectly poised to offer their remarkable expertise and extensive knowledge to their clients, with a wealth of experience enabling the very best in personalised, trusted insurance brokering.
